Discover the geothermal wonders, Maori culture, and volcanic landscapes of the North Island. From Auckland to the bubbling mud pools of Rotorua, the great lake of Taupo, and the dramatic volcanic plateau of Tongariro. A diverse route combining culture, nature, and adventure.
Pick up your motorhome in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. Explore the harbour, visit Sky Tower, and stock up on supplies at a local supermarket before heading south.
Drive south to Rotorua, the heart of Maori culture and geothermal activity. Visit Te Puia to see boiling mud pools and Pohutu Geyser. Experience a traditional Maori hangi feast and cultural performance.
Continue to Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake. Visit the thundering Huka Falls, try trout fishing, or take a cruise to see the Maori rock carvings. The lake was formed by a massive volcanic eruption.
Head to Tongariro National Park, a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site. If weather and fitness permit, tackle the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing (19.4 km, 7-8 hours). Otherwise, enjoy shorter walks and the volcanic scenery.
Drive east to the Art Deco city of Napier. Rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake, the city features stunning Art Deco architecture. Enjoy wine tasting at the many Hawke's Bay vineyards.
Drive back to Auckland via the Tararua Range. Consider a stop at Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata if time allows. Return your motorhome.
